Signal Teaching - How to Close Read Receipts in Signal (or Open them)

Read receipts are a common feature on other messaging applications such as WhatsApp and iMessage, and are displayed as white indicator bubbles on messages sent in Signal. If you close the read receipt and prevent people on the other end from seeing that you have read their message, you will not be able to see if they have read your message.

First open the "Signal" app on your iPhone or Android smartphone.

Next, click on the abbreviation of your profile photo, avatar or username in the upper left corner.

Select the Privacy option from the Settings menu.

Finally, turn off (or turn on) the Read Receipt setting.

As shown below, when opening a read receipt in Signal, both check mark bubbles will be filled with white when receiving and reading a message. Close the read receipt and the bubble will be empty, but the check mark will indicate that the message has been delivered.

Recipients will see the same type of indication in the text messages they send. When you close the reading receipt, no one you and the person you talk to will be able to see if the email has been viewed.
